Councillor urges community members to increase home security after recent armed robbery
Ward 132 councillor Annette Depp advises residents to increase home security, be vigilant, and to consume local news, as it could help you know of the latest crime trends and how to avoid them.
“In light of recent events, such as the armed robbery in Vorna Valley on January 21, it’s imperative to emphasise the importance of personal safety.”
These were the words of Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.
This comes after three armed suspects robbed Tebatso Thelejane’s home, where the suspects terrorised him, his three daughters, and his niece.

Deppe said residents can increase home security as a preventative measure of criminality. “Ensure your home is secure by installing proper locks on all doors and windows. Consider investing in an alarm system or security cameras to deter intruders.
“Some specific measures you can take to protect yourself is to try to avoid traveling alone at night, if possible. If you must, try to stay in well-lit, populated areas, and let someone know your whereabouts and expected return time. Be cautious when travelling at night,” said Deppe.
She also advises to stay informed about local news, as it can help residents know of the latest crime trends, and how to avoid them.

“Keep up to date with local news updates, especially concerning crime in your area. This knowledge can help you remain vigilant and aware of any potential threats nearby. Have an emergency plan for what to do in case you encounter an emergency situation, such as an armed robbery. Know the exits, keep important numbers easily accessible, and have a safe place to retreat to if necessary,” she added.
Deppe said residents need to always be aware of their surroundings, be on the lookout for unfamiliar or suspicious individuals, and don’t hesitate to report any concerning behaviour to authorities.
“Limit or avoid distractions, like looking at your phone or listening to music too loudly, when walking alone, as these can make you less aware of your environment. Most importantly, trust your intuition, because if something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and remove yourself from potentially dangerous situations as quickly as possible. Also strengthen community ties, by collaborating with neighbours to enhance community safety,” said Deppe.
She said residents can also form a neighbourhood watch programme, or simply agree to look out for one another. The councillor believes by taking these proactive steps, residents can help to mitigate the risks associated with crime, and contribute to a safer environment for themselves and those around them.
“Remember, personal safety is about being prepared and remaining aware in all situations,” concluded Deppe.
