Gauteng road upgrade projects should be complete by 2026

MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says both the K101 Road in Midrand and the P122 Road in Irene rehabilitation projects will adhere to the timelines and budgets established, with an estimated completion date set for March 2026.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela conducted oversight visits to two major road rehabilitation projects on August 13 – the K101 Road in Midrand and the P122 Road in Irene, Tshwane.

As the upgrade of K101 into a dual carriageway is making significant progress, motorists continue to face traffic congestion due to ongoing construction. This crucial project was launched by Diale-Tlabela on October 28, 2022.

Once completed, the dual carriageway will greatly enhance traffic flow and road safety, effectively alleviating congestion in the Midrand area. The existing K101 also serves as an alternative route to the N1 freeway.

The R500m K101 rehabilitation project includes the dualisation of the carriageway, from D795 Road in Midrand to the N1 (Brakfontein Road) at the northern edge of Johannesburg, the southern edge of Tshwane, spanning approximately 5.4km.

Key components of the project involve constructing three new bridges, extending the existing Rietspruit bridge, installing lighting along the entire road, implementing traffic signals, and building new drainage culverts and concrete side drains, as well as sidewalks and a cycle path along the western road reserve.

The P122 rehabilitation project focuses on enhancing traffic mobility through essential sinkhole repairs, reinstating pavement layers, and upgrading surface drainage, cross-drainage, and storm water systems.

Both projects reflect the department’s commitment to delivering high-quality road infrastructure, stimulating economic growth, and creating sustainable job opportunities for communities.

The MEC emphasised that both projects should be completed on time and within the allocated budget. The estimated completion date for both projects is March 2026.
