Midrand set for cleaner future as Pikitup Midrand Depot upgrade gains momentum

The major upgrade of the Midrand Depot promises better refuse removal infrastructure.

A major facelift is currently underway at the Pikitup Midrand Depot in Rabie Ridge.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of Pikitup, is upgrading the facility to enhance waste management services and improve refuse removal in the community.

The project includes the construction of a reinforced boundary wall, a modern guardhouse, a stormwater management system, and upgraded water and sewer services. Once completed, this facility will not only enhance security but also increase Pikitup’s capacity to manage waste more efficiently throughout Midrand.

This upgrade is part of a broader partnership between the JDA and Pikitup, announced earlier this year, which focuses on infrastructure improvements across Johannesburg to promote sustainable waste management and reduce illegal dumping.

JDA spokesperson Kenneth Nxumalo stated that the initiative falls under the agency’s Public Infrastructure Delivery Programme, which prioritises investment in key municipal services.

“The programme ensures that waste management infrastructure is developed and delivered efficiently, in line with Johannesburg’s growth and environmental goals,” Nxumalo explained.

In addition to the long-term benefits for service delivery, the project is already positively impacting the community. Five local labourers have been employed at the Rabie Ridge depot as part of the JDA’s economic development programme, which focuses on skills transfer, job creation, and uplifting communities through public works.

The scope of the project extends beyond the depot upgrade itself. It also includes the widening of Falcon and Stilt streets, stormwater and sewerage reticulation, water reticulation, rehabilitation, and landscaping of the surrounding area.

With construction progressing steadily, Midrand residents can look forward to improved waste services, a cleaner environment, and a facility that supports Johannesburg’s broader sustainability goals.
