Massive delays on N1 freeway after fatal accident

Five people have died when the mini-bus taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N1 North in Midrand.

A major traffic disruption is currently happening on the N1 North freeway following an accident. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) advises motorists to steer clear if possible.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla reports a single-vehicle accident involving an overturned minibus taxi between the Buccleuch Interchange and Allandale Road in Midrand. “The accident has resulted in multiple injuries and tragically, five confirmed fatalities. Emergency services and law enforcement officials are currently on the scene. The far-right lane is currently affected, and traffic is severely backed up.”

He said the freeway will be fully closed for the time being, to allow for the proper processing of the scene and recovery operations.

Motorists can expect heavy delays in both directions on the N1 freeway.

“The JMPD strongly advises all road users to avoid this section of the freeway and to seek alternative routes,” added Fihla.

He urged motorists to exercise patience and to drive with caution.
