The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall empowers women with self-defence training
Women’s month took on a new meaning at The IIE's Varsity College Waterfall with an empowering self-defence workshop.
Throughout women’s month, The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall transformed its campus into a hub of empowerment and unity by hosting a series of events aimed at celebrating, uplifting, and inspiring women.
One of the highlights was a dynamic self-defence class designed to equip students with the skills and confidence to protect themselves, while fostering a culture of strength and support.

This session, organised by the campus’ volunteer body committee, VC Cares, was led by certified instructor Risha Patak-Harie, the founder of i-LEAD Self Defence. Patak-Harie guided the students through practical techniques and safety strategies, encouraging them to take charge of their personal security.
In addition to physical skills, students gained access to free counselling services and women’s support groups on campus, ensuring that the message of empowerment extended beyond the classroom.
For many attendees, the workshop left a lasting impact. Thatelo Motsokwane, a fourth-year IIE Bachelor of Commerce student, shared her thoughts on the self-defence session, calling it incredibly empowering. “I learned some amazing techniques that I’m excited to practice and build upon. I gained valuable skills that I’m confident will help me in dangerous situations.

“After attending the session, I feel more aware of my surroundings, and learning the self-defence moves has given me the confidence to protect myself. I’m so grateful to the campus for this opportunity. It’s wonderful to see the campus investing in women’s empowerment and safety.”
Through initiatives like this, The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for young women.
