Professional skills workshop empowers varsity college future teachers
The workshop reinforced the importance of community among future educators as they prepare to enter their chosen fields.
To bridge the gap between academic training and the realities of the teaching profession, the IIE Varsity College Waterfall campus’ career services team successfully hosted a professional skills workshop.
The workshop was for fourth-year Bachelor of Education in Foundation and Intermediate Phase teaching students.

Hector Nkosi, the commerce faculty head and accounting teacher at Roedean School South Africa, delivered vital insights on essential skills that students must master as they prepare to transition from tertiary education to the workforce. His focus on interview techniques, CV writing, administrative skills, and key competencies highlighted what schools genuinely seek in newly qualified teachers.
As a seasoned educator, Hector equipped students with the tools necessary to present themselves confidently within the education sector.

Before the workshop, students were encouraged to submit their concerns and questions, which Hector skillfully addressed, fostering an environment of collaboration and networking. The workshop reinforced the importance of community among future educators as they prepare to enter their chosen fields.
Otshepeng Mabotho, a fourth-year Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching student, expressed the profound impact the workshop had on them.
“What stood out the most was how practical and honest the advice was. From the interview preparation points to understanding what’s expected of us in our early teaching years, I gained clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose as I step into this career. Mr Nkosi’s guidance reminded me that preparation and authenticity can set us apart. I walked away feeling inspired and ready to take on the journey ahead,” expressed Mabotho.
