Police in hunt for suspects who killed two Ivory Park officers
Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has assigned a team of seasoned investigators to probe the killing of two officers — a Sergeant and a Constable.
The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has directed the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, to mobilise maximum resources in the hunt for two criminals who shot and killed on-duty officers.
The suspects also disarmed the officers of their service firearms and fled with three weapons — two 9mm pistols and one R5 rifle — as well as two cellphones.
The incident occurred on November 28 in Ivory Park.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the two members, a sergeant and a constable attached to the Ivory Park Police Station, were conducting crime-prevention duties in Ivory Park Extension 9 when they were fatally shot by unknown suspects.
Mathe said the motive for the attack is not yet known.
“The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Mthombeni, who visited the scene, has since appointed a team of seasoned detectives and specialised units to find the killers and recover the state firearms,” said Mathe in a statement.

Masemola emphasised that ongoing attacks and killings of police officers, whether on or off duty, undermine the authority of the state.
“Between 1 April and 30 September 2025, the SAPS sadly lost six police officers who were killed in the line of duty. We are doing everything possible as management to ensure members are always operationally ready to respond to the call of duty by providing them with resources and ensuring they attend refresher courses and regular maintenance shooting exercises. To all our law enforcement officers out there, don’t die with the resources that we have given you,” said Masemola.
He urged officers to remain vigilant and act decisively whenever their lives or the lives of the communities they serve are under threat.
Members of the public with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspects are encouraged to call 08600 10111 or contact the Ivory Park station commander, Brigadier Ngcobo, on 076 411 2314.
