City enforces building laws with demolition of illegal Midrand structure

A building structure on Harry Galaun Drive was found to be in breach of municipal by-laws and national building regulations, prompting immediate demolition by City officials.

An illegal structure standing on a Midrand road reserve met its end after City of Joburg officials carried out a thorough inspection along Harry Galaun Drive, leading to its immediate demolition on February 2.

According to the city, structures erected without municipal approval not only flout the law but also compromise road safety, placing both pedestrians and motorists in danger.

Unauthorised structures, defined as any construction, extension, or alteration lacking prior written approval from the local municipality, are clear breaches of South African municipal by-laws, the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act and zoning schemes.

Following the demolition, the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, took to social media and stated that the era of lawlessness has officially ended.

“Today [February 2], City of Joburg officials identified and inspected a prohibited structure encroaching on the road reserve at Harry Galaun Drive in Midrand, leading to its immediate demolition. Unauthorised buildings not only breach municipal by-laws but also create serious safety risks for motorists and pedestrians,” noted Morero.

Midrand Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe allegeg that the structure was built before the road and that it might have been hijacked.
