SAPS arrests five suspects and rescues hijacking victim

This incident adds to the high number of vehicle-related crimes committed in Midrand, and this continues to alert the Midrand SAPS to be more vigilant.

South African Police Service Gauteng Highway Patrol members arrested five suspects and rescued a hijacking victim following a shooting incident in Midrand.

At about 18:50, the police members were conducting routine patrol duties in a marked police vehicle when they were approached by members of the public.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said, “A female community member reported witnessing a male being forcibly pushed into a Kia motor vehicle and pointed out the direction in which the vehicle had fled.”

Members immediately proceeded in the indicated direction and successfully located the suspected vehicle. A high-speed pursuit ensued.

The suspects’ vehicle was subsequently brought to a stop. Upon inspection, five suspects and one victim were found inside the vehicle.

It was established that the victim’s delivery motorbike had been hijacked before the incident. The victim was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment.

All five suspects were placed under arrest. One suspect was transported under police guard to the hospital due to a medical condition. Two firearms were recovered inside the vehicle and will be subjected to ballistic testing as part of the ongoing investigation.

The SAPS commends the swift response of its members and extends sincere appreciation to the vigilant community member whose timely report contributed significantly to the successful rescue and arrests.
