Shootout in Midrand: Police kill 1 suspect, arrest 2 in chase

Gauteng Highway Patrol members engage in a shootout with three suspects in Midrand.

What would usually be an uneventful Friday afternoon, with many heading home to start the weekend, took a dramatic turn for three suspected robbers in Midrand.

Gauteng Highway Patrol were on the lookout for a blue Hyundai i20, which had allegedly committed a business robbery in Olievenhoutbosch earlier on the same day (January 30).

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the vehicle was spotted on Allandale Road.

“Upon seeing the blue lights, they [the suspects] sped off, resulting in a high-speed chase and a shootout.”

The suspects’ vehicle was eventually stopped by police at the corner of Allandale Road and Waterfall Drive.

Col Nevhuhulwi added that one suspect was declared dead on scene, while the remaining two were arrested. A firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash were also seized.
