Hypoglycemic and shocked owl rescued at Mall of Africa by Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital
The hospital's Dr Karin Lourens says the owl is currently eating well on its own and its blood tests show a huge improvement.
A barn owl, Tyto alba was recently found at a restaurant in Mall of Africa.
With the help of the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital animal ambulance team, the owl was taken to the hospital for assistance.
An examination and blood tests done by the hospital led to the discovery of a severe muscle injury.
According to the director and head veterinarian Dr Karin Lourens, the owl was in shock and hypoglycemic on arrival, but after 24 hours of IV fluids and EmerAidVet carnivore tube feeding, it was feeling much better.
“He [the owl] is now eating well on his own and his blood tests show a huge improvement. He will soon be released back into the wild.”
The organisation treats indigenous animals free of charge, relying solely on the donations and support of the community.
Animal ambulance members volunteer their time and their vehicle to collect animals and, occasionally, donated items.
