Drake Koka Primary School empowered through laptops and printer donation

A school in Kaalfontein was at the receiving end of a donations made by Mettus and XDS Information Credit Bureau.

Drake Koka Primary School in Kaalfontein received a generous donation from Mettus and XDS Information Credit Bureau of a state-of-the-art large printer and four modern laptops.

The donation came as a result of a partnership between the Gauteng Department of Education, Johannesburg East District, and the two companies which have already seen another school [Mikateka Primary School] in the area aided.

Drake Koka school principal Onicca Mabina said, “We as a school are grateful to be chosen among many schools, so we can improve our coding and robotics. This donation will assist the school in its goal to be an ICT school and improve teaching and learning.”

The main objective is to assist schools in attaining coding and robotics competencies through ICT-related donations.

This will also allow schools across the country to achieve competence in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Alex Songo, deputy chief and education specialist, heads a unit responsible for partnership at the district and is the coordinator of this programme.

“We are excited as a department to partner with Mettus and XDS Information Credit Bureau and that this partnership will assist them to attain the first position in the Gauteng Provincial Government’s priorities on Tish (townships informal settlements and hostels) which is meant to redress past challenges and also assist to improve those conditions,” said Songo.

A Grade 7 learner at the school, Israel Kolisa, also shared that he was part of a coding and robotics team at the school through an ORT SA project completion that obtained position two last year due to limited resources, but with this donation, he is confident that they can get first position in the province.
