Semsa and Lory Park Zoo appreciates senior community members
A total of 40 pensioners attended the Pensioners’ Appreciation Day, with ages ranging from their late 60s to early 90s.
To honour senior members of the community, the Southeast Midrand Suburban Alliance (Semsa) partnered with Lory Park Zoo to host a free Pensioners’ Appreciation Day on November 30.
This event, hosted at the zoo, celebrated the contributions of senior citizens and fostered a sense of belonging within the Semsa community. Forty pensioners, aged from their late 60s to early 90s, attended.
Semsa secretary Reshma Somaroo expressed gratitude for the support from local volunteers and community members, stating, “The event was a tremendous success, with stakeholders coming together to provide a meaningful experience for our senior citizens.”

The primary goal was to honour seniors for their invaluable contributions. The event also provided practical support on issues such as pension rebates and introduced the pensioners to digital communication tools. Participants learned about resources such as the Semsa website, a community WhatsApp group, and CPF-linked emergency groups to enhance their access to information and support.
“It is essential to celebrate our elderly because they are the backbone of our community, and events like this remind them that there is a place for them in this community and that they are valued and cared for.”
The day featured engaging activities, including a guided zoo tour, a hearty lunch, and refreshments, allowing guests to socialise.

Zoo staff contributed with engaging presentations during reptile interactions and big cat feedings. Volunteers assisted with mobility needs, ensuring all guests could participate fully. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for feeling valued and connected to the community. Several guests remarked it was the best day they had experienced in a long time, appreciating the thoughtful planning and support.

“It was wonderful to see such a diverse group of seniors engaging with one another and enjoying the day.”
Many attendees left feeling more supported and connected, knowing they were part of a reliable network for assistance and companionship. “We hope to make this a tradition and find more ways to reach even more seniors in the community,” Somaroo added, thanking the Lory Park Zoo team and young volunteers for their support.
“Seeing the younger generation’s support was truly inspiring and speaks to the strength of our community.”
