Property owners over the age of 60 have until the end of June to apply for rebates from the City of Johannesburg before the new General Valuation Roll on 1 July kicks in.
The City’s group finance spokesperson, Kgamanyane Maphologela, explained that pensioners can, however, apply before September for the rates paid from July to be reversed.
Pensioners will still be able to apply for rebates after that, but likely without a promise of reversals.
Pensioners must be 60 years of age or older, own property and personally occupy the property. The property value must not exceed R2,5 million. The rebate is also only applicable for one property should the applicant own more than one property.
Also remember:
- Pensioners must have a gross income of less than R9 245 a month and if the new property value is R2,5 million or less then they qualify for a 100 per cent property rates rebate
- If a pensioner between 60 and 69 years old’s gross monthly income is more than R9 245 but less than R15 845 and the value is R2,5 million or less, they qualify for a 50 per cent rebate
- A resident of 70 years and older with a property valued at R2,5 million or less qualifies for a 100 per cent rebate.
