Johannesburg Water finally repairs Springwell Avenue’s blocked sewage after weeks of resident’s complaints

Residents were understandably anxious as the situation deteriorated, with complaints about the blockage being logged repeatedly since December.

After weeks of a persistent sewerage blockage, residents of Kyalami, on Springwell Avenue, can finally breathe healthy air again.

This long-standing issue has caused significant distress among community members, who have been concerned about the sewage problem since December last year.
Despite this, no action was taken by Johannesburg Water (JW) to resolve the situation.

Residents grew increasingly anxious as the situation worsened, logging multiple complaints. It was not until January 21 that JW repaired the sewerage system.

Resident Andrew Hart expressed his frustration, stating that he had logged more than five fault complaints himself. “It [was] a non-stop problem. Serious environmental concerns and biohazard. The sewage water goes into the spruit, and then into the Jukskei River.”

Before the repairs, JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed that the Midrand depot would check if logged complaints were properly assigned to the relevant teams.

“Customers would normally escalate with their respective councillor and ultimately to the depot. The operations team at the depot will attend to the blockage within 24 hours,” said Shabalala.

The JW team did respond to the sewage issue over the weekend of January 19, initially fixing the blockage. However, Hart reported that the system was blocked and overflowing again the very next day.

Residents logged their complaints once more, and JW acted quickly to address the issue.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe confirmed that the residents had reported the problem to her, and she took the necessary steps to escalate it to the Region A service delivery group.
