Ward 132 councillor applauds JMPD’s swift respond to illegal camp

The JMPD removed the individuals who were setting up illegal structures on the veld near the R55 and Shakespeare Road.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe thanked the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) for their quick response on February 8 to the illegal encampment on the corner of the R55 and Shakespeare Road.

She also appreciates residents for promptly reporting the issue. The JMPD removed the individuals, who were setting up illegal structures on the veld near the roads.

JMPD spokeperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said South African law prohibits the establishment of informal settlements without authorisation.

“Relevant legislation includes the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE Act) and municipal by-laws. These laws outline procedures for evicting unlawful occupants and may vary depending on the specific circumstances and location.” Fihla explained.

“It is important to note that evictions must be carried out humanely and lawfully, respecting the rights of all parties involved.”
