Midrand water pipeline upgrades coming along

The upgrades are planned to alleviate pressure in Carlswald and surrounds, and improve water storage for the communities.

With the Erand tower and pump station project nearly complete, more projects in Midrand are lining up, with the Carlswald reservoir and water pipeline project, to augment the Erand reservoir, also at the procurement stage.

The 20ML Carlswald reservoir detail designs have been completed, and the construction of the reservoir will begin once a contractor is appointed.

As part of its mandate to maintain and upgrade water infrastructure and provide services, Johannesburg Water (JW) has a reservoir and water pipeline project to upgrade the water pipeline network in Carlswald and improve water storage for communities.

Johannesburg Water to boost water supply in Midrand area with construction of Carlswald reservoir and upgrade of the water network.

It will also relieve the pressure from the Erand reservoir, and free up the water supply and capacity to Carlswald and the surrounding areas.

The communities which will benefit from the project include: Barbeque Downs extensions, Kyalami Park, Kyalami Heights, Kyalami AH, Kyalami extensions, Beaulieu, Blue Hills extensions, Willaway extensions, Glenferness AH extensions, Treesbank AH, and Plooysville AH.

The pipeline project is progressing well, and is at the environmental assessment stage, as well as the public participation process stage. A positive environmental authorisation was granted in September 2024.

JW’s general manager for Capex William Chitsa said that the building of this new Carlswald reservoir will improve water storage, as well as ensure an uninterrupted supply of water in the area. “There is constant urban development in the city, more so in the Midrand/Blue Hills/Kyalami areas, and JW needs to ensure that our infrastructure and service delivery match the growing population.”

The proposed pipeline is approximately 5.1km in length, and will start on Walton Road and end just outside the Blue Hills Country Estate entrance. It will service current and future developments in the area.

“The pipeline is required to implement the new Carlswald reservoir supply zone project, to augment the Erand reservoir, which does not have sufficient capacity. This will, in turn, supplement and improve storage capacity at the Erand system,” said Chista.
