Midrand Police VISPOL head vows to clamp down on crime
Colonel Dula Mokwena, who previously helped drop theft of motor vehicle cases from 35 to five a month in Parkview, plans to replicate this achievement in Midrand.
Midrand Police’s Visible policing (VISPOL) head Colonel Duka Mokwena hopes to remove the station from the top 30 crime ridden stations across the country.
Speaking to Midrand Reporter at the station on April 24, Mokwena, who boasts a wealth of experience from Parkview Police, vows to tackle crime activity in the area.
Mokwena, who was appointed in November last year, was reflecting on his five months in office. “My journey began in 1990, when I went to Hammanskraal College. I [paraded] in June 1991, before working at the college until 1992. I was then transferred to Jeppe SAPS, where I worked until 2022. I was then promoted to Lieutenant Colonel at Parkview SAPS, working as VISPOL head before being made a full Colonel on November 1, when I started here in Midrand”.

Mokwena takes over from retired VISPOL head Colonel Gonafeelan Micah Govender, whose farewell was held on July 26 while Colonel Hosea Mantji served as acting head.
Mokwena said, when he arrived at Parkview, the station was in the top 10, nationally, for theft of motor vehicles. However, together with the station commander, they managed to bring down those crime levels, and, eventually, were out of the top 10, which is one of the highlights of his career thus far.
“Parkview SAPS would be getting between 30 and 35 cases of theft of motor vehicles a month. We brought it down to around five. From 35 to five was a drastic drop, which is one of my highest career successes,” added Mokwena, now ready to take on the crime statistics in Midrand. “My commitment is to bring those crimes down to reasonable levels, to ensure community safety. Robberies, road rage, and [online scams], are some of the crimes we are prioritising, and hoping to bring down.”

When asked about some residents’ complaints regarding little to no police visibility, Mokwena said visibility will be improved throughout the five Sector Crime Forums. “We are improving on that. We have listened to the community members’ complaints, and we have changed our operation strategies, such as more operations per week. So, our community will see our cars, and the sector forums’ cars, patrolling.”
