After receiving a call, inspector Theo Mokgatle rushed to the scene of an attack on a jackal by a pack of dogs.
In the early hours of Monday morning, May 5, a black-backed jackal was attacked by a number of dogs. It was badly injured, finding a safe spot in the bushes to hide from the attack.
Inspector Theo Mokgatle, from the SPCA Midrand, who was sitting in peak hour traffic, received a disturbing call, alerting him about the injured jackal
He instantly made a safe U-turn and headed to the location where the jackal was last seen. He combed through the long, thick grass in hopes of finding the injured jackal.

Racing against time, with his boots, socks, and pants soaked in icy-cold water from the long-wet grass, Mokgatle managed to spot the jackal, swiftly retrieving it before making his way to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, where the jackal was to receive its treatment.
Due to the extensive injuries, the jackal sadly succumbed to its injuries on Monday afternoon, despite the efforts the wildlife team.
General manager inspector Pam Pretorious said: “We appreciate the caller who alerted us to this situation, and to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, for once again being there for us and our wildlife. It’s unfortunate that the jackal did not survive. We urge the community, as per the municipal by-laws, to keep their animals confined to their yards, and report any illegal hunters.”
