Johannesburg Water advances critical repairs to sewer pipelines affected by flood damage in Waterfall and Vorna Valley

The installation of the steel beams and the pipeline has been completed, and the contractor is currently engaged in constructing the upstream and downstream connection manholes.

After months of enduring unpleasant sewer odours, residents of Greater Midrand can now enjoy fresh air as the Waterfall Dam and Vorna Valley Vlei have clean water flowing into them.

Johannesburg Water is actively addressing sewage leaks that have affected the dam and vlei.

These leaks were caused by severe damage to the sewer pipeline at river crossings during the flash floods on March 5 in the area.

A section of the sewer pipeline was washed away, necessitating a dedicated infrastructure repair project. This project was handed over to the appointed contractor on April 4 and is currently underway.

The repair involves the installation of a new steel sewer pipeline to replace the damaged section, supported by concrete columns, steel beams, and rebuilt manholes on both sides of the river. Additionally, gabion structures are being added to strengthen the installation and protect against future flooding.

To date, a comprehensive topographical survey for the new pipeline alignment has been completed, and foundations and columns for both upstream and downstream structural supports have been successfully cast.

As a result, over-pumping operations have been temporarily suspended to create a safe and suitable working environment for the installation of the manholes. Once the manhole installations are complete, the recommissioning of the sewer pipeline is scheduled for May 21.

Johannesburg Water appreciates the patience and cooperation of all affected residents and stakeholders as they work to restore essential infrastructure and protect the environment.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe stated, “Thankfully, after two months, the Vorna Valley Vlei is flowing clean again.”
