Cold snap and possible snow as Joburg braces for icy week ahead
As Gauteng residents prepare for school holidays, forecasters warn of a significant drop in temperature, and a slim chance of snow over parts of the province.
Johannesburg residents are being advised to prepare for icy conditions this week, as weather models indicate a strong cold front is approaching.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and Snow Report Southern Africa, temperatures are expected to drop sharply, with snow likely in higher-lying parts of the country and even a chance of light flurries in Gauteng.
While snowfall in the province remains unlikely in large amounts, forecasters say brief dustings in the early hours can’t be ruled out, especially in the south and along elevated routes.
The cold front is expected to bring rain, icy winds, and widespread overnight lows in the single digits. Some areas in and around Johannesburg could wake up to sub-zero temperatures.

The timing coincides with the start of the winter school holidays, raising concerns about increased traffic on national routes as families head out of town.
Authorities are cautioning motorists to stay informed of changing weather conditions and avoid driving in hazardous areas, particularly in regions prone to snow and ice.
Gauteng’s roads are not expected to be severely affected at this stage, but safety officials are asking travellers to remain alert.
