Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement brings Mayibuye Park alive with Youth Day celebrations
The annual celebrations are part of Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement, which has the aim of exposing youth talent to the world.
Mayibuye Park was abuzz on June 16 as the Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement held its third annual Youth Day celebration.
About 500 children came along to a day of playing, dancing, singing, and overall fun with the support of Midrand Industrial Park-based company, Atlas Plant Hire, who also provided hot-dogs, juice, and fruits, bananas, apples, and oranges, which were sponsored by Gratston Fruits and Veg.
The activism movement’s chairperson, Loyiso Sohoyiya, said the aim was to gather youth and ensure they do various activities, depending on the theme of the year, including youth choir, dances, and poetry, to help expose their talents on various social media platforms and to encourage them to believe in themselves.

“Today’s aim is to ensure that parents support the community youth and their respective talents,” said Sohoyiya. “This will help them build their confidence and take their craft seriously because our township has a huge unemployment rate. As the movement, we used to go to the Midrand Industrial Park, where we met with Shaun [Wilson], the park manager. He introduced us to various companies. Eventually, we met Atlas representatives, and that’s why they are here today.”
He said sometimes they take these learners to various companies, when they have functions, to perform with the hopes they’ll be spotted, and have their dreams fulfilled.

Atlas representative Angelo Desai said that, as a company operating not too far from Mayibuye, they saw a need to help the movement achieve its goals. “The youth is our future and without inspiring them and trying to uplift them, we wont go anywhere as the country. We’re trying to do it within our area, and this is one of many events that will be happening in the future. We will be partnering with the Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement in the future.”
Desai urged other companies to start supporting the local communities they operate in.
