ANC Ward 79 honours Nelson Mandela’s legacy with community service at Eqinisweni Secondary School
Ivory Park’s Ward 79 ANC branch honoured the memory of Nelson Mandela the day after Mandela Day when they got together to clean and paint Eqinisweni Secondary School.
Eqinisweni Secondary School will reopen for term three with some classrooms freshly painted and a cleaner environment, thanks to the community clean-up campaign held on July 19.

This year, Ivory Park’s Ward 79 ANC branch honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy through a community project at the school. Nearly 100 members and residents spent over 67 minutes cleaning and painting the school the day after Mandela Day.

Mapula Diase, ANC Ward 79 secretary, expressed pride in the effort. “We came together as ANC volunteers to celebrate Mandela Day by carrying out a cleaning campaign. We recognise that hygiene is vital for our children’s health and well-being. Our aim is to create a clean, safe, and inspiring environment for learners to succeed.”

She emphasised that this act of service reflects Mandela’s lifelong commitment to education and community upliftment, highlighting the collective responsibility to build a better future. “As we reflect on Mandela Day and the month, let this serve as a reminder that each action – no matter how small – can make a big impact. Whether it’s cleaning a schoolyard, donating shoes, or inspiring young minds, these acts of kindness build a foundation for lasting change.

“This shows that when people come together to serve their communities, they contribute to a future built on shared responsibility and collective upliftment.”
