Mayibuye residents accuse City Power of allegedly ignoring damaged transformer for months now

“Here are a few concerns that we have picked up as the leadership that our community it’s not treated like customers but as consumers by City Power.”

These were the words of Mayibuye residents through the Mayibuye Youth Activism Movement. The movement said community members in Lenong, Senwamarula, Bulelwa Makomani, and Theresa Street have allegedly not had electricity for three months now due to a damaged transformer.

They said the painful part was that this transformer was the one that supplies Mayibuye Clinic with electricity.

“As we speak, our clinic has had no electricity for three months. There’s also a burnt transformer next to Mayibuye High School that has been out for a month, affecting nearby residents. And when we raise this issue, City Power tells us that they don’t have money at the moment,” said the movement.

The movement added that the power utility allegedly tells the residents they can only deal with the transformers that are working, and when they have collected enough revenue, that’s when they can consider fixing them.

They said other streets did not have electricity due to cable theft, and added that there were faulty pillar panels, also known as pillar boxes, which City Power allegedly said they were ‘unable to fix and there’s nothing they can do for now’.

“We fail to understand how they cannot be able to fix their infrastructure. We are tired of keeping quiet now.”
