Cleaning Noordwyk Park for runners to enjoy

'Dream Clean Team' as Lynne Maclean, Patricia Nementzik, and Rajendra Mahabeer are affectionately known, seek to create a clean space for the Noordwyk park runners.

‘Mother of the park’ Lynne Maclean, who cleans Noordwyk Park every Friday and Saturday morning, has heaped praise on the community members who help in her tireless efforts to keep the park clean.

Maclean, who has lived near the park for the last 32 years, was later joined by her friend Patricia Nementzik, who did not like the fact that she was cleaning the park all alone.

She said they were later joined by an employee of Erand Veterinary Clinic, who wanted to remain unnamed, but became a familiar face every Friday morning, cleaning the park.

The Dream Clean Team as they are fondly named, were then blessed to welcome Rajendra Mahabeer, who joined them for a good part of this year.

Maclean said community members, and those of the parkrun itself, then began to assist on days that they could. “This is always so appreciated. Another familiar face from the Noordwyk community is that of Otto Ramokoka [Sector 3 Crime Forum patrol co-ordinator], who often pops in and assists. Kirstin Oosthuizen, from Blue Hills Animal Hospital, will also give of her time on her off days. On average, a total of 5 bags of rubbish is collected.”

Maclean then returns to the park on Saturday morning, at 06:45, to pick up yet another bag of litter that has been left overnight, accompanied by Mahabeer and Jeanny Tshukudu, one of the event directors of Noordwyk parkrun. “Our objective is to create a clean space for the Noordwyk park runners, so they can enjoy the park in its beauty, as Mother Nature made it. The cleanliness of the park has brought more and more participants to the parkrun, as well as families in the area.”

Maclean is a very loved weekly volunteer at the parkrun, performing her role of marshal at ‘Lynne’s corner’, encouraging people to complete the 5km route. She is infamous for her whistle and her ululations as you pass her corner.
