Noordwyk Primary School market day teaches learners entrepreneurial skill

Teachers said the day was a success as the Grade 7 learners showed their business skills and the knack to make a profit when running a business.

Noordwyk Primary School was abuzz with various stalls as the Grade 7 learners held their market/entrepreneurs’ day. This occurred on August 28, to the excitement of learners in lower grades who came to purchase the Grade 7s’ wares.

The fun-filled day saw young learners, assisted by student teachers, selling various delicious snacks and sweets – all prepared with teamwork and innovation as part of their curriculum.

Teacher and department head of economic and management sciences Miranda Ndzukulu said learners understood that the purpose of running a business was to make a profit.

“I think we do have challenges, but I think the learners have grasped elements of business. For instance, they know that they need to recoup the money they used to buy products they were selling.”

Mpho Mudau, department head for English, said this day was part of the assessment task, as outlined in the annual teaching plan, which guides teachers on their activities throughout the academic year.

Mudau said the day was a success, as the stock was sold in record time. “It is for our learners to know the demand and ensure that they stock accordingly. Obviously, these are the elements we learn when hosting such days. The learners also plan their own budget ahead of the day, and for that, we need to praise them for being able to identify demand and sell their stock in time.”

The day was a resounding success, with the Grade 7s selling their goods, and the younger grades filling their tummies. The day then finished off with some dance challenges among the Grade 7 learners, celebrating their success in entrepreneurship.
