Carlswald’s young comedian builds an online empire

Mekaeel Haffajee proves that you don’t need fancy equipment to make a mark online, just consistency and courage.

As youth unemployment in South Africa continues to rise, 20-year-old comedian Mekaeel Haffajee from Carlswald is demonstrating to young South Africans that creating your own opportunities can lead to success.

“Jobs in South Africa are hard to find, so creating opportunities online gives people another way to earn,” Haffajee said.

“The internet connects us to the world, which allows us to use our skills, sell products, or create content. It’s not always easy, but it opens doors that don’t exist in the traditional job market.”

Two years ago, Haffajee, widely known as Yourboy Mekaeel, made a life-changing decision. He paused his music career to explore comedy—with no big studio, no fancy equipment, and no guaranteed audience.

“All I had was my phone, my ideas, and the belief that laughter can connect people, no matter where they come from,” he said.

Since that moment, his persistence has begun to pay off. Today, Haffajee has gathered more than 100m views across his social media platforms. “To me, it’s more than just a number—it’s a reminder of the power of consistency, creativity, and resilience.”

Haffajee’s journey into online comedy was not without its doubts. Initially, he was uncertain about whether anyone would watch, but he pushed through his insecurities and started posting content regularly.

“Let me tell you, the internet can be unpredictable. Many videos I thought wouldn’t perform well ended up reaching millions of views.”

Throughout his journey, Haffajee has learned valuable lessons for anyone pursuing their dreams.

“Consistency beats perfection. Your first posts don’t need to be perfect. What matters is staying consistent and improving over time.

I didn’t wait until I had perfect lighting, expensive cameras, or a large following. I started with what was available and built from there.”
