Amajita’s left-back chases Bafana dream
After Cosafa Cup success, Noordwyk Secondary’s Grade 10 Lunje Noqobo is working toward his ultimate goal, which is representing South Africa’s senior team.
Noordwyk Secondary School’s Grade 10 learner and Siwelele FC defender, Lunje Noqobo, is rapidly emerging as one of Midrand’s most promising young football talents.
The 17-year-old recently returned home with a gold medal after representing South Africa’s U20 national team at the Cosafa Cup, which took place as part of the Regional 5 Youth Games held in Windhoek, Namibia, from July 4 to 13.

Amajita claimed the top honours by defeating Malawi 3-0 in the final at UNAM Stadium, a moment Lunje describes as unforgettable.

“I was so excited to get the national team call-up; I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “Winning gold made everyone excited and over the moon. Our victory against Angola is when we started dreaming about the gold, as they were one of the strongest teams in the tournament.”
For Lunje, wearing the national jersey holds significant meaning. “Representing South Africa means responsibility — to uphold the country’s legacy and inspire millions of young South Africans to believe in the possibility of a better future,” he explained.

Lunje’s football journey began in humble surroundings. Growing up in Peddie, Ngqushwa, he spent his childhood kicking around plastic balls at home before joining Young Ideas FC at the age of 10.

His natural talent quickly attracted attention, leading him to participate in youth development programmes such as the Carlos Youth Soccer Development Academy, which honed his skills.
Last year, he joined the Supersport United Academy, now named Siwelele FC, after his move from Carlos Youth Academy in the Eastern Cape. Today, Lunje balances his schoolwork at Noordwyk Secondary with club commitments at Siwelele FC, where he continues to grow under the guidance of coaches and mentors who recognise his potential.
“My family, school, and club have been instrumental in my growth. They always encourage me to stay disciplined and enjoy myself on the field,” he said.
Lunje, who has proudly represented South Africa at both U17 and U20 levels, aspires to work even harder to make it to the senior national team. “I want to keep improving and one day wear the Bafana Bafana jersey,” he concluded.
