Waterfall City Athletic Club chairperson praises runners, and organisers, after cancellation of Sanlam Cape Town Marathon
400 athletes from the Waterfall City Athletic Club were ready to hit the road before the cancellation of the race. Muneiwa Ndonyane praised them all for their sportsmanship after the cancellation, and praised the organisers of the race for making the tough decision.
“To our members, well done. You’ve shown what true sportsmanship looks like, both on and off the road. Although most of you didn’t get to run the race that was intended for this weekend, the fact that you were ready to take on this challenge is truly commendable.” These were the words of Muneiwa Ndonyane, Waterfall City Athletics Club (WCAC) chairperson, praising his racers after the disappointment following the cancellation of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, on October 19, due to strong winds. WCAC had 400 athletes ready to hit the roads.

Ndonyane said that although many of them were unable to achieve the goals they set for this race, this should not discourage the process. “This was simply a setback, not a defeat. Remember: Sometimes the goalpost moves, but that doesn’t mean the goal is out of reach. Go out there, keep training with a positive mindset, and continue pushing toward your goals. You’ve already proven your resilience – now keep showing it.”

She said runners’ maturity, understanding, and grace in reacting to the cancellation of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon did not go unnoticed. “To the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon team, as a club that hosts one of the biggest half-marathons in Gauteng: The Waterfall City Half-Marathon, we understand the immense effort, time, and logistics that go into staging an event of this magnitude. For any organising committee to make such a difficult call is never easy.”
