Hampton Road, Glen Austin, sinkage could soon be a thing of the past

Khayalethu Gqibitole said a memorandum of understanding between JRA and Rand Water has been reached to repair the sinkage of Hampton Road, George Road, and Dale Road in Glen Austin.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) head of regional operations Khayalethu Gqibitole confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Rand Water to do reinstatements of Hampton Road in Glen Austin.

The road has been subject to sporadic sinkage over the years, after Rand Water’s installation of a pipeline project in 2020.

After this project, Hampton Road intersections, including the corner of Hampton and George roads, were the first to crumble.

Shortly afterwards, the corner of Hampton and Dale roads suffered the same fate.

However, Gqibitole said a service level agreement has been reached between the two entities.

“We have just finalised a memorandum of understanding [MoU] with Rand Water for JRA to do tar reinstatements on their behalf.

The MoU is South Africa-wide, and Hampton Road will be one of two roads to be fixed under it. We will advise on [the] delivery date once the MoU is ready to be operational.”

He said their previous inspection indicated that there was an inadequate compaction of the layer works during the installation of the pipes, which likely contributed to the structural instability of the road surface.

In an article, Glen Austin gets that sinking feeling. [Week ending October 24], Glen Austin Resident Association chairperson John Mphatsoe said he was wary that the delays to repair the road could lead to potential further damages.

Since March, Rand Water has not responded to inquiries with regards to the sinking roads.

On October 20, the paper followed up with Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo, who promised feedback, saying that a team had been sent to inspect the area.

Despite several follow-ups, Rand Water has still not responded.
