Spark Midrand High School turns purple in stand against gender-based violence
Grade 10 learners from Sparks Midrand High School participated in the Unmarked Graves Impact Project initiative: Stand for Change, leading an initiative to show their support for survivors, and victims, of GBV.
Participating in the Unmarked Graves Impact Project initiative: Stand for Change, learners from Spark Midrand High School demonstrated their collective stance against gender-based violence (GBV).
Led by Grade 10 learners, the campaign, on November 14, aimed to confront the realities of GBV and femicide, honour lives that have been overlooked, and create spaces for difficult conversations that can drive meaningful action.
Spark Midrand High School principal Ofentse Molefe said the school community wore purple to show solidarity with survivors, and to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis of violence against women in South Africa.

“As part of the continued campaign, Unmarked Graves has called on all Spark Schools scholars to wear black, with a touch of purple, on November 21, and to participate in reflection activities, including a ten-minute moment of silence and a pledge against inequality and violence.”

Molefe said the school aims to ensure that the stories of those who can no longer speak for themselves are brought to light through this initiative, and to empower young people to advocate for justice, dignity, and change.
The campaign brought learners together in meaningful reflection and will form part of a wider awareness effort across all Sparks Schools.
