Two men arrested as police close in on Ivory Park gun suspects

Two men were arrested after police uncovered unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen property during an intelligence-led operation in Ivory Park.

Two male suspects were arrested in Ivory Park after police recovered unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen property during an intelligence-driven operation.

The arrests, on January 15, were carried out by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Community Liaison Unit (CLU) in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence Unit and other law enforcement stakeholders.

According to EMPD, officers were acting on information about two individuals suspected of being in possession of illegal firearms.

The operation led police to a residence on Magorogoro Street, where a 31-year-old man was approached and informed of the purpose of the visit. The suspect consented to a search of the premises.

“During the search, officers discovered a silver 9mm short pistol with defaced serial numbers concealed between a bed base and mattress, along with two live rounds of ammunition,” stated EMPD in a statement.

Police also recovered several items suspected to be stolen, including two speed point machines, a sound bar, two plasma televisions, various bank cards, and four vehicle keys.

The suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for possession of the items.

Following the first arrest, officers proceeded to a second address in Ivory Park Ext 8, where a 47-year-old man was apprehended. He was found in possession of an unlicensed silver 6.35 pistol, one magazine, and a live round of ammunition. “The firearm was confirmed to be stolen and linked to a case opened in Goorsfontein,” EMPD added.

Both suspects were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property.

They were detained at the Ivory Park Police Station and are expected to appear before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
