Construction progresses at Pikitup Midrand Depot

With construction well underway, the revamped Pikitup Midrand Depot will play a key role in improving refuse collection and combating illegal dumping.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) stated that progress is being made on the upgrade of the Pikitup Midrand Depot in Rabie Ridge.

This project aims to strengthen waste management services and improve refuse removal across Midrand communities.

In a social media update posted on March 7, the agency confirmed that construction at the depot is progressing steadily, with several key components already underway.

According to the JDA, site works and structural improvements are progressing as planned, with the upgrade expected to modernise the facility and strengthen its operational capacity.

The project forms part of efforts to enhance service delivery by Pikitup.
The upgrade includes the construction of a reinforced boundary wall, a new guardhouse, installation of a stormwater management system, and upgrades to water and sewer infrastructure. Once completed, the improvements are expected to enhance security at the depot while increasing Pikitup’s ability to manage waste more efficiently across the Midrand region.

As part of the project’s economic development component, five local labourers from the Rabie Ridge community have been employed on-site. The employment opportunities form part of the agency’s programme aimed at promoting skills transfer, job creation, and community upliftment through public infrastructure projects.

JDA and Pikitup announced a broader collaboration last year, which included the redevelopment of the Midrand depot. The partnership focuses on upgrading waste management infrastructure across the city to promote sustainable waste practices and help reduce illegal dumping.

JDA spokesperson Kenneth Nxumalo previously stated that the initiative falls under the agency’s Public Infrastructure Delivery Programme, which prioritises investment in key municipal services and facilities.

Once completed, the upgraded depot is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening refuse collection services and supporting cleaner neighbourhoods in Midrand and surrounding areas.
