Highveld Gardens honours resident with heart-warming 100th birthday celebration
Chris Osullivan’s 100th birthday was a truly special occasion at Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge, where staff and residents gathered to celebrate a rare milestone with song, dance, and heartfelt appreciation for a life well lived.
Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge was filled with song, laughter, and heartfelt celebration on April 10 as residents and staff honoured one of their own, Chris Osullivan, on the remarkable milestone of his 100th birthday.
Staff members sang and danced in tribute to Osullivan, who was also presented with a birthday cake to mark her century of life.
Lodge manager Pulane Motlafi described the occasion as deeply meaningful, stating that reaching such an age is rare and worthy of recognition. “Celebrating a 100-year birthday is something special, as it’s not an age that people simply reach,” she said.

Motlafi emphasised the importance of celebrating residents, adding that families entrust the lodge with the care and well-being of their loved ones.
“It is important for us to make our residents happy because their families have placed their trust in us. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do,” she said.

She further reflected on the significance of Osullivan’s milestone in today’s society.
“Nowadays, it is not common for our mothers and grandmothers to reach such an age. It is truly a blessing to celebrate her 100 years with us. It also gives us hope and shows that living a long life is possible.”
Motlafi shared her thoughts on longevity, attributing it to a combination of upbringing, lifestyle, and personal well-being.

“I think the secret to reaching such an age may lie in how one is raised, what they eat, and how they carry themselves throughout life,” she added.
Beyond celebrations, Highveld Gardens Retirement Lodge offers various weekly activities aimed at keeping residents engaged and active.

Mondays are dedicated to personal grooming, including hair care, while Tuesdays see mobile residents taken on outings to local malls for shopping, and there is creative expression on Wednesdays with activities such as painting, drawing, and dancing.
Thursdays bring excitement with bingo games and prizes, and Fridays are reserved for exercise sessions to promote physical health.
The lodge accommodates elderly residents from various backgrounds, including those who are retired, unwell, or living with disabilities, ensuring they receive care in a supportive and inclusive environment.
