Kyalami garden refuse site struggles to cope with increased load
The closing of the Marlboro, Woodmead, and Bryanston garden refuse sites has led to the overload of the Kyalami site, creating havoc for those trying to offload their garden refuse.
The Kyalami Garden Refuse Site is taking more refuse than it should.
With the Marlboro, Woodmead, and Bryanston garden refuse sites being closed, this has forced residents to come dump their garden waste at the garden refuse site in Kyalami.
This means that the garden refuse site in Kyalami is experiencing an overload, causing residents of Kyalami to raise concerns.

They say the overload is a problem, especially since they don’t see Pikitup coming to the site to empty the skip bins.
Ward 94 councillor David Foley, who did an oversight visit to the garden refuse site, said he has tried escalating the matter several times since November 2025, but the waste seems to be a never-ending issue.

“This is the worst that it has been in a long time. The state of the Kyalami garden refuse site is completely and utterly out of control. I’ve spoken to the depot manager, David Mahlangu.
He knows about this and his trying his best, but ever since the contract for a new fleet came in November 2025 it’s been like this. People cannot safely dump their garden refuse anymore.”

The councillor also added that residents tend to dump things that are not garden refuse, another contribution to the problem.
Pikitup garden refuse team leader Lindiswa Jijana, who was found on site, said they are facing challenges emptying the skips because of the lack of infrastructure on site.
“We need the site closed for four days, so we can properly work on emptying the refuse because the three areas coming here to dump their garden refuse has added extra load. Before that, we would, at least, need an addition of infrastructure, such as four truck compactors, two roll-ons, a tractor-loader-backhoe, and a Bobcat.”
