Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has stated that there are currently no plans to upgrade State Road from gravel to tar, with the project remaining dependent on future budget allocations.

The response comes after the Midrand Reporter asked the agency whether the long-standing gravel road in President Park would eventually be tarred.

The inquiry follows recent maintenance work carried out by JRA after residents repeatedly raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the road.

In late March this year, Midrand Reporter highlighted the poor state of State Road, which was riddled with potholes, flowing water, and uneven surfaces making travel difficult for motorists and residents.

JRA head of infrastructure development Kwazelela Mcetywa confirmed that State Road does not form part of the agency’s current infrastructure projects.

He explained that the agency’s gravel roads programme has experienced significant budget cuts, with the available funding being prioritised for projects already under construction.

“Furthermore, the budget has been drastically reduced on the gravel roads programme. State road can be considered in the next financial year, provided budget is made available.

JRA will further request the city for additional budget[during] the mid-term adjustment.”
