Six arrested in Ivory Park as traffic police recover stolen transformers worth R1.5m
Six suspects face charges after multi-agency operation targets infrastructure crime in local township.
Seven electricity transformers valued at about R1.5m were recovered by the Gauteng Traffic Police, the Gauteng Traffic Wardens Infrastructure Unit and TDP Security Services during a recent operation in Ivory Park.
Six suspects were arrested in connection with the crime and are being processed at the Ivory Park Police Station, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety stated on August 26.
“The suspects are facing charges relating to contraventions of the Immigration Act, aiding and abetting illegal foreigners by providing accommodation, as well as the unlawful damaging, removal and destruction of electricity transmission, distribution and reticulation infrastructure,” the department said.

The suspects also face charges relating to the unlawful possession of electricity distribution equipment and infrastructure.
The department welcomed the arrests and the recovery of the transformers, calling it an important step in protecting critical infrastructure and preventing further losses to communities and the electricity supply network.
The department commends all law enforcement officers involved in the operation for their continued efforts to disrupt criminal activities targeting essential infrastructure.
The operation forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to safeguard public infrastructure and hold those involved in infrastructure-related crimes accountable.
