The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned motorists of a major incident at the intersection of New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road (R101) in Midrand.

Emergency Management Services (EMS) are currently at the scene responding to a reported light aircraft crash.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said a secondary motor vehicle collision occurred at the same location following the initial crash, resulting in severe traffic disruptions and heavy delays.

JMPD officers are being deployed to assist with traffic control, scene management and diversions.

“At this stage, authorities have not confirmed the number of injuries or casualties resulting from either incident. Details will be provided as further verified information becomes available,” Fihla said.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, avoid the immediate area where possible and keep access routes clear for incoming emergency response vehicles.

Motorist are urged to utilise the following alternative routes:

• N1 Highway: Use the N1 via Allandale Road or Olifantsfontein Road (M38) interchanges to bypass the New Road / R101 intersection.
• Arterial Diversions: Route via Olifantsfontein Road (northbound) or Allandale Road (southbound) to bypass the Glen Austin perimeter.
• Local Midrand Traffic: Use Lever Road or Dale Road to travel through the area without approaching the affected intersection.
