Midrand training plane crash leaves 2 seriously injured

Aviation investigators are probing a training flight crash involving a Piper Cherokee in Midrand, with both the instructor and student pilot seriously injured.

The Accidents and Incidents Investigations Division (AIID) has confirmed the aircraft crash earlier this morning in Glen Austin, Midrand.

The morning sky rumbled as a Piper Cherokee 140 fixed-wing crashed into the garden of a private property on February 4. According to the authority’s spokesperson, Sisa Majola, this was a training flight which departed from Grand Central Airport.

Emergency services closed off the area to swiftly attend to the scene. The flight instructor and a student pilot were on board. They both sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.

AIID is currently conducting an on-site investigation and will issue a preliminary report within 30 days of this accident.

Previous crashes in Midrand
  • In 2024, another plane crashed in Glen Austin on Donovan Road today, November 21. Two occupants of the plane were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. The other sustained minor injuries.
  • In 2023, two people were injured in a Midrand helicopter crash. Here, an instructor and a student pilot were on board conducting training exercises when the accident occurred inside the Waterfall City Cemetery, not far from a complex in Waterfall City.
