A positive attitude and a winning spirit
KYALAMI - Shumbashaba Charity and Special Olympics SA held the 5th Unified Sports Day at the charity's premises.
The day had athletes competing in bocce – an entry level Special Olympics game similar to bowls – equestrian events, soccer and volleyball.
There were 162 athletes who gave their best in the four different sporting codes, as disabled and able-bodied athletes played side by side in their chosen sport. The athlete’s oath of the day was: ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt’.
“In a Unified Sports event it is the power and joy of sport that takes centre stage,” said Jacky du Plessis of Shumbashaba.
“It shifts one’s focus to what our athletes can do, not what they can’t. Attention to disabilities fades away and, instead, we see our athletes’ talents and abilities come to the fore.”
Spectators cheered their favourite team on as they tried to motivate them to try harder and give their best.
After the games, a nutritious meal and drinks were handed out, as scores were tallied and the eagerly-awaited awards ceremony was held.
Former Bafana Bafana soccer player, Mark Fish, was present to hand out soccer awards to the players who participated.
The closing ceremony was followed with the dousing of the Special Olympics flame.
