Watch out for SA’s karting girl

JOHANNESBURG – .Fabienne Lanz made history when came out second at the Rotax Max race.

South African motorsport has a history of producing great female racers.

Pat Sonnenschein will be remembered for her saloon car successes in the 60s; Judy Witter followed her in the 70s; and Desiré Wilson remains the only woman ever to win a Formula 1 race. Not much has changed.

South Africa’s famous karting girl, Fabienne Lanz who lives in Midrand, has once again rewritten the history books. Lanz competed in the Rotax Senior Max, which went like clockwork for her, especially the handling of the kart. Her grip on the track made life so much easier for her this time, and she was in her element.

SA’s karting girl only received her Praga kart just before the regional at the beginning of August and has been working hard on the kart set-up with limited time.

“The start was great; I moved into fourth place and on the second lap, I went into third place and stayed in that position for most of the race. The heat on the day caused some damage to the tyres and resulted in them starting to go off and the understeer got worse. I moved into second position on the last lap and ended second,” said Lanz.

Now she will take some time out to celebrate before more hard work in preparation for the trip to the Rotax World Finals in Sarno, Italy on 22 October.
