Midrand Hitters reach semis in tournament
MARLBORO – A local last man stands cricket team shines at 15-over tournament.
Midrand Hitters proved their worth with bat and ball at a recent cricket tournament where they reached the semi-finals.
The team that is based out of Midrand Knights Cricket Club, and plays in the last man stands (LMS) tournaments, competed in a 15-overs-a-side tournament hosted by the LMS community during the cricketing off-season.
The tournament was held under mild and sunny weather at Cyrildene Primary School in Bruma over the weekend of 1–2 June.
To the cheering of players and family members on the sidelines, the Midrand Hitters were impressive in their batting on a slow wicket, often reading the bounce well to place the ball into the gaps.
With ball, they used their spinners a great deal and fielders never gave away a second of wasted time fetching the ball to defend runs.
“Our team mingles well and gels well and they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and where to improve as well,” said team captain, Kishore Maramreddy.
“It’s not a new team. We always play off-season games together.”
Maramreddy added that due to time constraints the tournament was hosted over a weekend, with group matches on the Saturday and semi-finals and final on a Sunday.
Midrand Hitters played two games on Saturday and won them both to reach the semis.
In the semi-final, Midrand Hitters scored 83 runs in their allotted 15 overs against Surya XI. The chase was close and went down to the last ball, with Surya XI needing six runs to win. The batsman hit maximum, breaking a few hearts over the boundary.
