Midrand SPCA faces R250 000 monthly shortfall as demand grows
Rising operational costs and growing community calls threaten daily rescue services as an animal shelter appeals for public assistance.
Midrand SPCA is experiencing significant financial pressure and needs a broader, more sustainable support base to meet the costs of delivering essential services.
The society’s general manager, inspector Pam Pretorius, said that despite months of fundraising efforts and the generosity of supporters, the society continues to struggle to secure the funding needed to sustain operations.

“We are asking individuals, businesses and corporate partners to stand with us by contributing towards the ongoing delivery of animal welfare services in our community,” said Pretorius.
For 37 years, the Midrand SPCA has been a vital part of the community, investigating animal cruelty, responding to emergencies, rescuing animals in distress and caring for stray animals. Over the past year alone, its work has touched the lives of more than 23 000 animals.
“Animals will still need protection. Cruelty complaints will still need to be investigated. Animals in our care will still need food, veterinary treatment and daily attention,” Pretorius explained.
Cruelty investigations escalate
“Midrand continues to grow, with new residential developments, businesses and infrastructure transforming the area. Yet the resources available to the Midrand SPCA have not kept pace with the demands of the community it serves.
“As the area expands, so does the need for animal welfare services, cruelty investigations and assistance to animals in distress. The responsibility to protect these animals does not grow with the community unless the resources to do so grow as well.”
In the first six months of the 2026/27 financial year, Midrand SPCA has continued its vital work, reaching more than 24 000 animals through inspections, cruelty investigations, rescue operations and direct animal care.
Between April and September this year, the society’s work included 14 607 animals monitored during routine inspections, 153 cruelty investigations involving 3 207 animals, and 1 160 animals collected and rescued.
Moreover, 130 after-hours calls were responded to, 3 631 animals were admitted into the society’s care, 142 animals were sterilised, and 1 266 animals received veterinary treatment and preventative care.
“Delivering these responsibilities requires reliable financial resources, yet we cannot continue indefinitely without the financial resources needed to fulfil them,” added Pretorius.
Operational costs mount
“It currently costs between R480 000 and R520 000 per month to operate Midrand SPCA and sustain its essential animal welfare services. Despite ongoing fundraising efforts and the generosity of our supporters, the society is facing a monthly shortfall of approximately R250 000.”

This ongoing shortfall places increasing pressure on the SPCA’s ability to meet essential operating expenses and maintain the services that animals and the community depend on.
“We urgently need to broaden our support base and encourage more individuals, businesses and corporate partners to contribute, whether through once-off donations or regular monthly support,” she explained.
“Continued support will help Midrand SPCA maintain its established role in protecting animals, investigating cruelty and responding to welfare concerns across the community. We are asking our community and the business sector to help strengthen the support that makes this work possible.”
The SPCA is appealing to individuals, businesses, corporate partners, trusts and foundations to help through this critical period.
“We urgently need immediate financial contributions to help sustain our operations; monthly donors who can provide reliable, ongoing support; businesses and corporate partners willing to make meaningful financial commitments, and introductions to potential major donors and funding partners who may be able to help secure our future.”
Every contribution matters, whether it is a once-off donation, a monthly commitment or an introduction to someone who can help.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who supports the Midrand SPCA. Every contribution, whether regular or once-off, helps us continue our work and makes a difference to the animals who depend on us.
“However, the responsibility of sustaining the society cannot rest on the shoulders of a few generous supporters alone. We need more individuals and businesses to please stand with us and contribute towards securing the future of the essential animal welfare services our community relies on.”
