Young gymnast excels in the provincial finals
MIDRAND – After her 1st place in Clubs, and 2nd place in Ball and Hoop, Calandra can now prepare for Nationals.
Christ Church Preparatory School and College learner Calandra du Toit excelled in the Gauteng Rhythmic Gymnastics finals on September 3.
According to Dawn Schmirtz who does the school’s marketing, the Grade 9 learner competed in the Level 9 U15 categories of Ball, Hoop and Clubs.
Calandra came first in Clubs and second in both Ball and Hoop. With her combined results, she won her category and will represent Gauteng in the Nationals scheduled to take place on October 3.

Commenting on how the competition went, Calandra said she felt very nervous and confident at the same time. “I knew my routines and trusted my coach, Allison Beyers’ confidence in me.”
She added, “The only downside of the day was that only my mom was able to attend the event due to Covid-19 restrictions, however, all the competitors had become very close to each other and everyone was rooting for each other. I am looking forward to the challenge of competing at nationals.”
Schmirtz said Calandra chose her own music for Ball, a friend chose her piece for Clubs and her choreographer chose the piece for Hoops.
She added that Calandru started doing gymnastics at four years old and started specialising in rhythmic gymnastics seven years ago.

Delighted with Calandra’s achievements, Alviro Petersen, director of sport and culture at the school, said it took hard work and dedication to achieve the level of performance that they have seen from her.
“I have no doubt that she will continue to make herself, her family, and our school proud. We wish her well for nationals and we will continue to support Calandra and any other pupil at the school in their quest for high performance,” he concluded.
