Midrand Cricket Club opens for new recruitments ahead of the premier league
A new coach will be reviled for the club’s premier league side and the premier league reserve team.
Traditionally cricket is a non-starter during wintertime as there is icy weather but most unions in Gauteng have introduced winter cricket from juniors to seniors.
Midrand Cricket Club took advantage of this by keeping its junior and senior age groups active as well.
“This cricket action has not only worked as a means to keep fit for the guys but it has also been a recruitment expedition for the premier league side,” said George Mukoki a player and private lessons coach at the team.
With Midrand playing in the U19 Johannesburg Winter League, it has opened up opportunities for premier league recruitments for promising teenage cricketers at the club.
“It has been over seven weeks of winter cricket action and as a club committee, we have been looking at possible [youthful] additions for the [premier league] team,” said Mukoki.
The club’s promotion team that got promoted to the premier league last season has an average player age of 35, and moving forward the club wants more youngsters playing premier league cricket who will blend well with the experienced seniors.
“The moment the club set its sights on premier league promotion it became imperative that we work towards youth integration into the senior teams.
“We have juniors like Tyler Dase Xolani, Brian Shaw and Mohammed Bilal who have been part of the previous season with the Saturday 4 side and Colt’s team as well.”
He said July was a bit of a break for the players and from August the preseason practice games would be back.
“We are looking forward to the premier league season and staying in action has been part of
the premier league promotion excitement going around at the club.”
In light of the tough cricket schedule ahead, a new coach would be appointed for both the premier league side and the premier league reserve team.
