Midrand Spoilers blew a two-goal lead against Malandela Mighty Heroes
Samuel Maboa's side arrived at Alex Safe Hub on March 4 hoping to escape the relegation zone, but this devastating loss dropped them to 18th place.
Midrand Spoilers blew a two-goal lead to be thrashed by Malandela Mighty Heroes 7–2 in a Safa Joburg regional league encounter.
To make matters worse Spoilers played the second half with 10 men, and have now gone 11 straight games without a win.
Samuel Maboa’s side arrived at Alex Safe Hub hoping to escape the relegation zone but this devastating loss dropped them to 18th place, three points ahead of 19th-placed Ma-Africa.
Things had begun promisingly for Spoilers and their strong start was rewarded with a 15-minute lead as Omphilwe Molobi made an instant impact after converting from the spot.
Spoilers’ Gilbert Mathosa had been fouled in the box by Malandela skipper Sandile Mathe and Molobi’s powerful bottom-left strike made it impossible for Malandela keeper Tokollo Thamaga to save it.
Eight minutes later, Mathosa’s powerful strike had Thamaga begging for mercy after the shot-stopper had misdirected a goal-kick.
Malandela’s first shot on target came from Ashley Simons but would not be their last as Sibonelo Makhabela converted from the spot before Otlotleng Kutu evened the score five minutes from the break.
Malandela started playing like a possessed team and their dominance was rewarded when Spoilers’ Kopano Mahlase picked up a red card following a reckless tackle on Simons from behind.
Luyolo ‘LaLiga’ Mzalamba calmly converted from the spot to make it 3–1 to Malandela before halftime.
It was all Malandela after the break as they ran riot with Simons getting his brace and then his hat-trick.
Next on the scoresheet was Unathi Memela before substitute Esihle Maniyo bagged his brace.
After the game Spoilers skipper Songezo Choma said, “We have players who work and they have to be at work even on weekends. That is why we are losing because week in and week out we are always changing our line-up. This issue is killing the team.”
Spoilers will look to get back to winning ways when they host Hungry Lions on March 11 before hosting league second-placed FC Munich on March 12.
