Former Midrand Local Football Association chairperson honoured with Legacy Cup

The Bob Maredi Legacy Cup, named after the former chairperson of the Midrand LFA, is an honour and a privilege for him.

When current Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) chairperson Sthembiso Buthelezi informed the former chairperson about a planned cup tournament named after him, Bob Maredi was overwhelmed.

The association will launch the first Bob Maredi Legacy Cup at the Rabie Ridge Community Hall on January 17. The tournament will feature all the LFA regional teams and women’s league teams.

Maredi (72) is the longest-serving chairperson of the MLFA, having served since the inception of the association in 2016 to 2022 but has been with the association for more than two decades.

Speaking to the publication at his home in Allandale on January 8, Maredi said he was called by Buthelezi late last year to tell him about the cup tournament.

“As soon as I got the news, I was so excited and overwhelmed. This is history because in some of the LFA’s and regions that I know, a former chairperson has never been honoured like this. And what makes me more happy is that I am being celebrated while I am still alive. Some chairpersons are celebrated while they are no more,” said Maredi.

He said this recognition meant a lot to him and hoped to see the association grow because he and his executives wanted to see the overall growth of the MLFA and players’ development.

“It’s a gift of a lifetime for me and I will forever cherish it. I would like to thank the current chairperson for coming up with such a tournament to honour me. What excites me the most is that it involves ladies’ football – showing that they are focusing on the collective growth of both sets of players.”

Maredi hoped it was not just a once-off tournament and continued on a yearly basis.
