Vital water safety initiative launches in Midrand

By empowering learners and residents with essential water skills, Arthur Joshua is not only addressing immediate safety concerns, but also laying the groundwork for future champions in the sport.

Former head of sport at Midrand High School Arthur Joshua has launched a swimming and water safety initiative in Midrand, responding to the growing concern over water safety in South Africa.

He emphasised the alarming increase in drowning incidents, particularly the tragic number of children who drowned in Gauteng last year.

Joshua aims to equip learners, youth, and adults with essential water skills to help prevent future tragedies.

“Despite Midrand High not having a swimming pool, the nearby Halfway House Primary School graciously offered its swimming facilities, providing a convenient solution,” he explained. “In light of the rising incidents of drowning across the country, Lifesaving South Africa has called for urgent measures to improve water safety.”

Joshua, an accomplished sportsperson with Regional Colours in swimming, athletics, squash, hockey, and golf, strongly believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn how to swim.

His initiative goes beyond basic swimming lessons. It also aims to identify talented learners and create pathways for local and international competition. Currently, the programme is exclusive to Midrand High learners, but Joshua envisions expanding access in the future.

He is dedicated to building a well-structured swimming programme that prioritises safety and skill development. “Though currently small in scale, this initiative is driven by a deep commitment to water safety for all,” Joshua concluded.
