Derby fever hits Kyalami as riders saddle up for 2025 showdown
The 2025 Toyota SA Derby promises high stakes, world-class competition, and international flair as riders gear up for the ultimate equestrian challenge in Kyalami.
Equestrian excellence is reaching new heights this year as The Year of the Legend gallops toward its grand finale – the prestigious Toyota South African Derby, set to take place from October 1–5 at Kyalami Equestrian Park.
Since Easter, riders, horses, and their teams have been put to the test across some of the country’s biggest shows, building anticipation for what is dubbed the toughest title to win in South African equestrian sport.
The derby’s demanding 1 200m course with 18 obstacles has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 1965, continuing to challenge even the most skilled competitors.

Heather Mpofu, show director at Kyalami Park Club, said this year’s theme honoured every role player in the sport, from riders and horses to grooms, officials, volunteers, and staff.
“Now in our fourth year of partnership with Toyota South Africa Motors, together we continue to inspire all members of the equestrian community to push beyond their limits.” said Mpofu.
The 2025 edition promises a blend of tradition and innovation. Alongside the much-loved Micro Speed Derby, spectators can look forward to the inaugural Dressage International Team Competition – a special matchup between South Africa and Japan.
“With Japan, the birthplace of Toyota, competing on South African soil, the contest carries deeper meaning,” Mpofu added.
“It’s more than a competition; it’s a celebration of friendship, cultural exchange, and the universal language of equestrian sport.”

For riders, the stakes are high. This year’s showjumping champion will trade their saddle for the keys to a brand-new Toyota Hilux Double Cab Legend, underscoring Toyota’s commitment to honouring the sport’s heroes.

Glenn Crompton, vice president of marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors, noted that this year marked a special milestone.
“As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of this iconic competition, we’re not only honouring the legends of the sport but also inspiring the next generation of riders and enthusiasts.”
Families and fans alike can expect a true festival atmosphere, with disciplines spanning showjumping, showing, and dressage.
Entrance will be free on September 26, offering the community a chance to experience the excitement firsthand before the main event.
Grandstand tickets for the final day on October 5 are priced at R500 and available at www.kyalamiparkclub.co.za.
