Two suspects found themselves in the hands of Ria Sebetsa security officers after allegedly attempting to open a vehicle at a Midrand filling station on August 22.

The suspects were detained after security officers responded to a panic-button alert from a client who reported suspicious behaviour at the premises. They were subsequently handed over to Midrand police for further investigation and processing.

Ria Sebetsa Security Services operations director Dillon Maduray said the security team intervened after receiving the alert. According to Maduray, staff at the filling station helped identify the vehicle linked to the suspicious activity.

“Our client pressed their panic button and alerted us of the suspicious behaviour. Staff on site pointed out the vehicle.”

Maduray said no devices or weapons were found in the suspects’ possession at the time of their apprehension. “However, they were caught on camera attempting to open a car door and leave the premises.”

The incident has once again highlighted concerns around car jamming.

“Car-jamming remains a concern in many areas, particularly around shopping centres, fuel stations, ATM areas, and other locations where motorists frequently leave and return to their vehicles. These incidents can occur quickly, which is why security awareness and proactive surveillance are important.

“We encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious behaviour to security personnel or SAPS rather than confronting suspected criminals themselves.”

Ria Sebetsa Security Services encouraged motorists to take the following precautions:
• Physically check that their vehicle has locked before walking away,
• Do not rely solely on the vehicle’s locking indicator or remote,
• Avoid leaving valuables visible inside the vehicle,
• Remain aware of people loitering or behaving suspiciously around parked vehicles,
• When returning to the vehicle, check your surroundings before entering,
• If something appears suspicious, move to a safe location and contact security personnel or SAPS,
• Avoid using your cellphone while walking to or from your vehicle, as this can reduce situational awareness, and
• Never confront a suspected criminal. Report suspicious activity to trained security personnel.
